An 11-year-old girl died after being shot by her father on her first day of school, police said.
Timothy
Batts, 29, shot and killed his daughter Timea Monday at their home in
Hendersonville, a suburb north of Nashville, according to authorities.
He first told investigators that someone else had shot her as she walked back from school, Detective Sergeant Jim Vaughn said.
Batts
drove his daughter to the hospital, where she died. Investigators then
determined that Timea had been shot inside the home.
She had just come back from her first day of school when the shooting occurred, authorities said.
Timea, a sixth grader in Sumner County, lived with her father and two younger siblings.
She was pronounced dead at 4.27pm on Monday, according to The Tennessean.
Batts
now faces charges of reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, false
reporting and other charges in connection with the shooting death of his
daughter.
He remains held on a $1million bail and is due to appear in court on August 24.
'Timea
was a bright and kind girl who was well loved by her classmates and
teachers, Sumner County Schools spokesperson Jeremy Johnson, said about
Timea.'
Neighbors held a candlelit vigil for Timea on Monday night, WSMV reported.
